The Malacca state government plans to build five sluices to overcome the problem of flash floods in the state particularly in the Melaka Tengah district.

Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam said the locations identified for the construction of the sluices were in the Sungai Melaka area near Kampung Pengkalan Rama Pantai and Tesco Supermarket besides Kampung Enam, Kampung Lapan and Tengkera.

“Residents no longer need to worry about the problem of flash floods which frequently occurred once the sluices are ready,” he told reporters after looking at the situation in Kampung Air at Bukit Palah in Malacca which was hit by a flash flood yesterday.

Sixty-one families affected by the flash flood received cash aid amounting to RM200 each from the state government to ease their hardship.

Mohd Ali, however, said he needed the full allocation which had been approved by the federal government amounting to RM128 million to overcome the flood problem in the state.

“We have received RM40 million and had utilised the amount to overcome the flood problem but we still need the RM88 million from the allocation approved,” he added.
