The former personal assistant toan Umno assemblyman in Penang is to lodge a police report today against one Gopinathan Jayaratnam for allegedly making disparaging remarks about Islam in his Facebook .

It is learnt that Gopinath, who hails from Klang, has apologised for his action, saying his Facebook account has been hacked and that he had lost his laptop.

However, he has not been forgiven and at least nine Facebook pages have been opened to date, condemning Gopinath and some calling for his death, arrest or that he be killed.

About 11am today, Gopinath was picked up by police at his Kelang Jaya home and is being investigated under the Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and Section 298A of the Penal Code.

The former PA, Mohd Izam Hassan, said when contacted that he lodged his police report in Bandar Perda, near Bukit Mertajam, at 4pm. He wants Gopinath "arrested and detained" for his action.

'Stern action should be taken'

Mohd Izam said he made the report in his capacity as Penang Perkasa research and cyber studies bureau chief.

He said in his report that the authorities should be more sensitive and monitor closely actions that insult other religions and culture.

"Stern action should be taken to prohibit such social problems from growing within negative elements," he said.

"We are too apologetic and are too concerned to enforce the federal constitution and relevant laws."

Mohd Izam said he also wants Gopinath to be punished as he did not comply with the country's constitution which places Islam as the official religion, while others have the freedom to practise their religions freely.

He added that Perkasa was not a racist organisation, although it has been constantly treated as a "black sheep".

"I believe that there will be many other reports filed against this person nationwide," Mohd Izam said.

He said Perkasa was only a platform for Malays to protect and preserve their rights in accordance with the federal constitution.

"We are not a racist group or anti-Chinese, anti-Indian or against any religious party. We accept our multiracial, multifaceted culture.

"Therefore, it is our understanding and acceptance as a citizen to uphold those laws and guidance," he added.
