PM turns Budget speech into political soapbox

VOXPOP 'Desperation is all written on the corridors of power, that Najib has to resort to name calling during his Budget presentation.'

Najib ends budget speech by bashing Pakatan

vox populi small thumbnail Onyourtoes: PM Najib Razak, the occasion is for you to deliver the national budget for 2013 as finance minister, not as BN chief or Umno president.

But you see no wrong in what you did. It reflects who you are - a person who will not hesitate to exploit every opportunity and someone who will do anything to secure his own position and power.

How then to take the moral high ground? How then to talk about serving the rakyat, about being fair to the people, and about keeping your sacred promises?

Anonymous #32993250: Desperation is all written on the corridors of power, that Najib has to resort to name calling during his Budget presentation.

This is a dole-out budget conceived to garner votes, rather than to strengthen the country's economy. There wasn't any measure to create more jobs.

Pakatan Rakyat may have promised the stars and galaxy, however we will only know if they can deliver once they are in Putrajaya.

Changeagent: "We recognise that the BN government is not without fault, but what differentiates us from others is that they do not have the courage to accept mistakes," said Najib.

What an interesting statement. So we have it from the horse's mouth that what differentiates BN is their courage and willingness to accept mistakes.

PKFZ (Port Klang Free Zone), NFC (National Feedlot Corporation), Scorpene purchases, C4 murder, abuse of judiciary system to harass opposition leaders, Teoh Beng Hock's death, guidelines to discriminate against the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community, prawn farm, Perwaja steel and MAS (Malaysia Airlines) bailouts, and other endemic corruption matters are easily accepted as mistakes by BN and swept under the carpet.

Not Confused : Of course, Pakatan leaders are making promises. What else can they do as an opposition but spell out what they promise to do when they are given power.

How can they implement any of their policies without being in power? All the opposition can do is to set out its manifesto spelling out exactly what they would do if given the honour of forming the next government.

On the other hand, BN have been making promises for 50-plus years and they still ask for more time to deliver them. It's time to put them in the opposition bench for a while. It will do them good and the country will also benefit.

Gerard Lourdesamy: BN is already in its own galaxy of corruption, abuses and mismanagement.

Despite the huge deficit, Najib threw caution to the wind and dished the goodies like Santa Claus without a care for who is going to pay for this borrowed money.

The fact that operating expenditure is far bigger than development expenditure proves that BN is bankrupt of ideas save and except for self-preservation.

This budget is nothing but a continuation of last year's budget. No new ideas and no care for the future.

Righteous: It doesn't seem very statesman-like for Najib to turn the budget speech into a political soap box.

How about talking about Malaysia and our hopes for a better future instead of bashing the opposition?

NewMalaysia: With national debt reaching RM502 billion and 53.7% of GDP and last year's budget was overspent by RM19.6 billion, Najib still claimed that such an irresponsible budget was 'Janji Ditepati'.

Good Men: Perhaps this exorbitant debt is Pakatan's fault as well?

A rock concert reminder from Bersih to gov't

Jimmy Ng: Let's all make the extra effort to get our friends and relatives to go to this Bersih event come Oct 13.

Let this be a reminder to the Election Commission (EC) and the powers-that-be that Bersih 3.0 wasn't a fluke and the events that happened then have not been forgotten.

Let this also be a reminder to the EC that we, the rakyat of Malaysia, are still waiting for them to get off their backsides and carry out and complete all the electoral reforms requested by Bersih before the next GE.

Anonymous #79199503: I wonder if members of these rock bands have received visits from the police and the music industry associations?

Tan Heng Ken: Simple medical practice - in order to cure the disease/diseases, kill the virus/viruses. The virus that caused the Malaysian disease is none other than the BN family of viruses, with Umno and MCA spearheading the pack.

Ferdtan: Good idea. Is it a paying concert where one has to buy tickets? Bersih's committee, please clarify.

One more thing, be careful that there are no untoward performances, like too sexily dressed dancers and singers, as the whole BN establishment and the mass media like Utusan Malaysia, The Star, New Straits Times and Sinar Harian would be watching to expose and damn.

Don't let these unnecessary happenings hijack the real message of Bersih. As it is also a rock concert, ensure no sabotage - i.e. crowd bringing alcoholic drinks, and of course, drugs.

Let it be clean fun for all with a meaningful message. We shall be there.

Apa Ini?: Watch out for the 'agent provocateurs' who will probably be sent in to make trouble. Get your mobiles ready to photograph them just in case you see them coming.

Jedi_Who: Suaram should also ignore the government crackdown meant to distract them by having an event of their own. Instead of a ‘dragon boat race', we should have an ‘inflatable Scorpene submarine race'.
