Home minister Hishammuddin Hussein announced the provision of personal accident insurance coverage for members of the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) while on duty.   

He said the coverage amounting to RM40,000 was valid between Sept 5 this year and Sept 4, 2014.   

"For a start, 100,000 Rela members would receive the benefit," he said at a gathering between Rela and government leaders at Dewan Pak Musa in Beaufort, tonight.  

Hishamuddin said the insurance covered death, total permanent disability, partial permanent disability, medical expenses, hospital allowance, prosthetics and death benefits.  

Rela has almost three million members nationwide as at Sept 27 this year.
