Kedah Umno is continuing with its effort to seek out and register about 200,000 eligible people who have yet to register as voters in the state.

Kedah Umno liaison committee chairperson Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said registration was carried out daily.

"Umno divisions had been instructed to open voter registration counters on working days beginning last month while voter registration counters had long been set up at the Kedah Umno headquarters in Bangunan Tunku, Alor Setar.

"Umno is always seeking mechanisms to facilitate voter registration, which includes directing federal development and security village committees to find and register eligible individuals in their villages,” he told reporters after a state Umno meeting yesterday.

Ahmad Bashah said Kedah had a total of 1.025 million voters as of August, compared to only 873,000 during the 2008 general election.

Umno and other Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties had registered 68,000 voters from 2008 up to August this year, he said.

On the distribution of electoral seats among component parties, Ahmad Bashah said an agreement had been reached, similar to the one in 2008.

"I am glad there are no issues on the number of seats allocated to each component party. We are maintaining the status quo of the 2008 general election.

"Any change will be determined at the central level," he said.
