The Sultan of Selangor hopes Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) students are not influenced by demands for freedom of speech by certain parties which only places importance on political ideologies.
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is also UPM Chancellor, also hoped students and graduates would not be trapped by negative cultures such as party politics, or be obsessed with keeping pace with current politics.
"I hope the knowledge learned will be used as a guide to become successful with excellence, without compromising the values, which is the core of the society in this country," he said at UPM's 36th convocation ceremony in Serdang today.
Sultan Sharafuddin said, students and UPM alumni must have high patriotic spirit and not belittle the country's sovereignty or do anything which could tarnish the nation's image.
He said students and graduates should also not be influenced by negative elements such as corruption, dishonesty and abuse of power which would tarnish the image of the university.
