Kedah DAP is strongly against the Alor Setar local council’s billboard dress code, claiming that all Pakatan Rakyat parties were not consulted beforehand, according to Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia today.

In the Utusan Malaysia front-page report, Kedah DAP chairperson Lee Guan Aik reportedly said DAP did not agree with the Alor Star City Council’s (MBAS) implementation of a billboard decency code for both Muslims and non-Muslims.

“Kedah DAP will not lend support to Hudud law and an Islamic state,” he added in a press conference.

He said Islamic law should be discussed at the three Pakatan parties’ state and central level before the code was implemented.

Last Thursday, Alor Setar mayor Mat Noh Ahmad announced that models depicted on billboards must adhere to decorum, with standard Bahasa Malaysia usage, reported New Straits Times.

In a press statement today, Chong criticised MBAS’ decency code as affecting the dressing rights of non-Muslims, stating that females might be prohibited from wearing “skimpy outfits” such as Baju Kurung and Sarong Kebaya.

The PAS-led Kota Baru Municipal Council had issued a summons against a non-Muslim salon owner as her Muslim female employees allegedly dressed inappropriately according to Islam.

In 2009, PAS urged Muslims and non-Muslims to dress properly in Tengku Anis park in order to respect local Islamic teachings.
