Some 1,000 people will take to jogging along Chinese cemeteries around Pengerang in Johor on Nov 4 in another fresh effort to save the fishing villages and the people's heritage from being overtaken by mega petrochemical projects.

NONE Dubbed "Jogathon Warisan Piala Dugong Pengerang 2012" , the event is named after a dead dugong that was found along the Pengerang seashore.

Jogathon organising co-chairperson Robert Lua told a press conference yesterday that the concept of the jogathon was taken from a similar activity held the past 12 years to save a few heritage burial sites in Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall had moved to acquire eight cemeteries and a crematorium along Jalan Sungai Besi then, but gave up after massive protests from residents.

azlan Since then, heritage activist NGOs have beautified the ghastly cemeteries and regularly hold awareness activities about these sites, including an annual jogathon.

Lua expects at least 1,000 joggers to show up for the 5km run that will take participants along the main street of Pemgerang, the coastal area and through two cemeteries.

The jogathon is being jointly organised by the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, the Association of Kwong Tong Cemetery and six other NGOs.
