The Land Public Transportation Commission (Spad) is confident of transforming fully the public land transportation system

by 2020.

"The national transportation system has never been aligned with the national progress and development. For us, it is time to change and improve because we cannot change in a day a system which has been in existence for a long time," he told Bernama in Kuala Lumpur.

He said although Spad received opposition for the efforts carried out, he regarded them as an indicator they were on the right track.

"The physical condition of the national transportation system is good but I am confident it can become efficient and excellent if transportation operators cooperate," he said.

Since it was set up in 2010, SPAD implemented reforms to improve public transportation, especially in the Klang Valley, and, the latest, the free Go-KL City Bus service, which angered some taxi entreprenuers.

Bulk of complaints on KTM

Responding to the issue, Syed Hamid conceded that many taxi drivers felt victimised by the move, but said Spad's responsibility was to ensure good service.

"They should not be angry with the free Go-KL bus service, which only involved two routes. I am confident if the taxi service is satisfactory, passengers including tourists, will opt for taxis," he added.

The free bus services covered the 7.4 kilometres Green Route (KLCC-Bukit Bintang) and the 6.5 kilometres Purple Route (Pasar Seni Hub-Bukit Bintang).

Syed Hamid said the commuter and electric train services of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad received the most complaints because they were often late.

He said the matter was being tackled including by introducing 36 more coaches.

On the Spad circular on lorry load which was enforced on Sept 25, Syed Hamid said the circular was to ensure the safety of other road users.

"The circular is to ensure lorry operators are not too greedy in carrying load to the extent of endangering road users and damaging roads," he added.
