The government is looking into revising the salary scheme of civil servants including giving raises by up to five percent, said chief secretary to the government Ali Hamsa.

He said the revision was necessary to help civil servants cope with the rising cost of living.

"We look into this in categories, if the five per cent at the higher end is too high we will have to make adjustments," he told reporters after attending a meeting of civil servants and the Public Sector Innovation Awards ceremony at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) yesterday.

Also present at the event which was attended by more that 500 civil servants were Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit, director-general Mohamad Zaidi Zainal and Malacca state secretary Omar Kaseh.

Ali said the review would be comprehensive to ensure all levels of the civil service benefited including those whose salaries had become static because they had reached the maximum level.

At the function, the Malacca State Secretary's Office won the award in the Information and Communications Technology Category while the Alor Gajah District and Land Office in the District and Land Office Category. They each received a trophy and a cheque for RM300,000.
