Major Japanese retailer Aeon Co said today it has purchased the fourth-largest supermarket business in Malaysia from French grocer Carrefour SA for 147 million euros (US$191 million) to expand its presence in Asia.
The acquisition of Carrefour Malaysia, which operates 26 large-scale supermarkets, made the Japanese retailer the country’s second-largest retailer group.
Aeon, which already runs 29 stores under its own name in Malaysia, plans to boost the total number of stores it operates in the country to 100 by 2020, it said.
Aeon has strengthened its presence in China and South-East Asia as the Japanese market has continued to shrink.
