Fifteen NGOs had staged a protest yesterday against the Pakatan Rakyat mega-rally to be held in Seremban tomorrow, urging the organiser to cancel the event to avoid chaos.

According to Malay daily Berita Harian , they included Movement to Dignify National Fighters Malaysia (GMPN), Senawang State Assembly Youths and Islamic Missionary and Welfare Organisation (Pekida) (right).

NONE Armed with banners that read "We don't support street politics" and "We love peace", they sang patriotic songs.

Before the protest, some 20 representatives of NGOs also lodged a police report at Senawang police station, demanding that the rally be called off.

According to the report, Seremban OCPD Saiful Azly Kamaruddin had reiterated that if Pakatan proceeded with their plan, they would breach the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 as they had not filled up the application form.

He said the police have given the opportunity to the organiser to complete the form according to the law but there had been no response.

Details of defiance

"I have met with representatives of the organiser before this and informed them two things.

"First, the police had been informed about their rally, and secondly, the application could not be processed because the form was not completely filled up.

"If they proceed, the rally would break the law and action could be taken," he was quoted as saying.

NONE Despite the warning by police, Pakatan has decided to carry on with its plan to hold the rally from 4pm to midnight at a private vacant land in Taman Seremban Jaya, about six kilometres southeast of the state capital.

The happening targeting 50,000 participants is to kick off a string of roadshows in each state in the run-up to the 13th general election.

The climax of  the roadshows will be a grand finale timed for January next year.

Dubbed ‘People's Uprising Assembly', the rally in Seremban will highlight issues of public interest in the past one year, including the Lynas rare earth plant, the petroleum hub in Pengerang, Johor, electoral reform demands raised by Bersih and the Kelantan government's oil royalty demand.
