The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) constantly monitors the movement of militants to prevent them from using Malaysia for shelter or transit, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Zulkifeli Mohd Zin said today.

He said that for example, the MAF cooperated with the Thai military in monitoring suspected terrorist groups in southern Thailand and prevented them from seeking shelter in Malaysia.

“The MAF also shared information with the Thai military at the common border. We will deter any attempt to turn Malaysia into a transit point for terrorists,” he told a news conference after attending a blood donation campaign in conjunction with the 79th MAF Day at the Defence Ministry in Kuala Lumpur.

Zulkifeli was asked to comment on the recent militant attacks in southern Thailand which resulted in four people killed and nine injured.

He gave his assurance that the unrest in southern Thailand would not pose any threat to the common border areas and that the people should not be overly worried about the incidents there.

The MAF was always on the alert along the border and carried out patrols and worked with the police, he said.
