Wanita Umno has proposed that the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU), deployed to quell rioting and illegal assembly, lend its muscle to tackle criminal activities, as well.

This follows feedback from the grassroots obtained by the movement, which stated that the FRU assist other police branches in the force to tackle robbery, snatch theft and rape.

Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the grassroots had suggested that the FRU go to the ground and help in areas where the crime rate was high.

"This recommendation was given to Wanita BN, especially in town, when we look at the crime percentage which is of concern... although the number (of crime incidents) is reduced, it is still worrying," she said.

Shahrizat was speaking to reporters after visiting two police officers who were shot and injured by criminals recently, at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital's intensive care unit.

The police officers, reported to be in stable condition, are Lance Corporal Mohd Samsul Anuar Mohd Adnan, 27, of the Gua Musang police station and Corporal Mat Raduan Mat Hassan, 50, from Machang police headquarters.

In the incident, Mohd Samsul Anuar sustained gunshot wounds in the abdomen after he was shot by a gunman at a roadblock in Paloh, Gua Musang on Oct 30.

Mat Raduan was injured in the hands and body after being shot by a thug at 45km Jalan Kota Baharu-Kuala Krai in Kampung Kemuning, Machang last Wednesday.

The thug was shot dead by the police.
