Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam today warned of the possibility of major floods in the state soon and advised all relevant department and agencies to be prepared.

He said heavy rain over the past few days would cause rivers to swell and overflow, triggering floods.

“Floods may occur simultaneously in many places in the state. We are monitoring the Malacca River, particularly at Durian Tunggal, which usually gets an overflow of water from upstream,” he told reporters after launching a project to supply electricity to Pulau Besar at Pantai Siring, Pulau, in Malacca.

Mohd Ali said the state government had activated the flood operations room in Kota Cemerlang, Ayer Keroh and the people could obtain the latest information on floods by calling 06-333 3333.

Meanwhile, as of 3 pm today, 104 people from 23 families had been evacuated to three flood relief centres, two in the Jasin district and one in Melaka Tengah.
