PAS Youth has challenged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Rajak to follow the example of a truly democratic electoral process , as shown in this week's US presidential election.

"For the coming 13th general election, it will be good for the PM to learn from the US electoral process.

NONE "Najib ( right ) should reflect on and compare the standard of democracy in this country with that of the US.

"There is a gulf of a difference, like comparing the earth with the sky, and the PM can see it for himself," Federal Territory PAS Youth deputy chief Muhd Suhaimi Abdul Aziz said in a statement today.

Drawing examples from the election that saw Barack Obama re-elected yesterday to the White House for a second term, he noted how the Americans were able to choose the leader of their choice through a truly democratic practices.

He asked Najib on the other hand, "Will the prime minister resign and hand over the government to a provisional government to govern the country when the election is going on?"

NONE He also noted how Obama had not used his powers as the incumbent  to deny the rights of his opponent Mitt Romney, who was given the freedom to critique Obama’s principles and had the chance to debate publicly with the incumbent.

“The media was also not biased in coverage and was fair to (both parties). The media was not seen to be carrying out propaganda to slander any party,” he said.

“Mitt Romney was fortunate that he was not the slightest bit slandered by the media using various cooked up propaganda,” he said.

“Furthermore, we don’t hear of the people being disgusted with or doubting the US elections commission for fraud in the electoral roll, or for carrying out a flawed electoral process,” said Muhd Suhaimi. 

Will Najib respect voters?

His challenge to Najib was whether he was prepared to emulate the democratic processes shown in the US elections by ensuring that the EC was not biased or influenced by “invisible hands” and to clean up the electoral roll.

“Is Najib’s determination strong enough to clean up the voters list, discard the postal votes (system), and to prevent foreigners from becoming voters to allow for a truly respectable election?’’

He also asked if the PM was brave enough to let the media provide fair coverage for all the parties and leaders without any defamation or bias, or if he would step aside to allow the caretaker government to do its job without interference.

“Is the PM willing to step down from his post (after Parliament is dissolved) and to hand over power to the caretaker government while the election is in progress?

“Most importantly, is the prime minister prepared to accept the people’s decision in the upcoming 13th general election with an open heart and without any dirty action even if he and his party were to lose to Pakatan Rakyat?’’, he asked.
