A disabled man died after being trapped in a fire that engulfed a two-storey shoplot in Jalan Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur early today.

City Fire and Rescue director Khirudin Drahman said the victim his 30s was a worker at the motorcycle shop.

“The fire happened at 2.35am. The upper floor had rooms rented out to workers who managed to escape when the fire broke out,” he told Bernama .

He said firemen from the Pantai, Hang Tuah and Sri Hartamas fire stations brought the blaze under control by 3am and that adjacent shops were not affected.

The victim was identified as Mohd Nor Mat Yaakob, 32, from Pasir Putih, Kelantan and had just started work as mechanic a month ago.

His brother Nizam told Bernama Mohd Nor was injured in his legs in a road accident 13 years ago and was not able to walk normally.

He said Mohd Nor, who lived in Gombak, had to spend the night at the workshop because he could not ride his motorcycle home due to heavy rain.

The victim’s body was sent to the University Malaya Medical Centre mortuary.

Losses and the cause of the fire are still under investigation.
