NGO Save Sarawak Rivers Network (Save Rivers) during their campaign trip to Australia has called on the government there to "intervene" in the Sarawak's mega dam projects by stopping its companies involvement.

NONE In a press statement yesterday, Save Rivers chairman Peter Kallang ( right ) said that they have met with member of the Legislative Council, John Kayes in Sydney at New South Wales Parliament after the launch of a Anti-Dam Campaign in the southern continent.

The aim is to stop Hydro Tasmania's involvement in the project, as the company is one of its several consultants for projects ,including the Bakun Dam.

Save Rivers also claimed that the Tasmanian government-owned company is providing skilled manpower to Sarawak Energy Bhd through its subsidiary, Entura.

"We want Hydro Tasmania to stop providing their service in building the dams in Sarawak, which is built with total disregard for the well being or consent of the people affected and cause total and irreversible environmental destruction," said Kallang.

"Instead of these mega dams, we would like to request Hydro Tasmania to help the people of Sarawak in setting up alternative sources of electrical power in collaboration with the indigenous people and which is environmentally friendly."

NONE During their trip, Kallang and village head James Nyurang also met with representatives of Entura.

Kallang and Nyurang are part of an ongoing campaign tour to raise awareness of the controversial dams project, that will include meetings with Australian politicians and companies in Canberra, Hobart, Launceston and Melbourne.

Among the participants are 12 indigenous people of Sarawak, who are protesting against Sarawak Energy Bhd's massive hydroelectric dams project.

The group itself is embroiled in a fight against 12 proposed mega-dams in Sarawak, including at least one ongoing blockade of the road leading to the Murum Dam construction site.
