Magistrate Hafizah Johor Arif Johor handed down the sentence on Romzul Hadi, 32, and Mohd Hanafi Aziz, 27, after they pleaded guilty to the charge.
Romzul, an Indonesian, and Mohd Hanafi, were charged with stealing the garbage bin, worth RM1,000, belonging to Block C, Rumah Pangsa Orkid, Jalan Kenanga 4, Taman Desa Cemerlang, Ulu Tiram, at 5.33pm last Nov 24.
Based on the facts of the case, they then sold the garbage bin to a scrap metal dealer.
The theft was recorded via a closed-circuit television camera which was installed at the flats.
In mitigation, Romzul said he had an elderly mother to support, while Mohd Hanafi said he had three young children. Both were unrepresented.
Prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Khazrin Haffiz Khalil.
