A full check of the Mambong clinker plant’s facilities in Kuching by the relevant authorities on air and water pollution has not revealed any negative feedback on its discharges, Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMSB) group managing director Richard Curtis said today.

He said the Sarawak Department of Environment’s (DOE) report following the check, which was conducted yesterday and Nov 28 this year, found that no emission was in breach of international standards or the company’s ISO14001.

So far, he said, Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board’s (NREB) Post-Environmental Impact Assessments (PEIA), which were carried out on a quarterly basis by a DOE approved third party consultant, also did not have any negative feedback on the plant.

“It is hard to imagine that the clinker plant could have breached emission policies since it has not been in production for over nine months due to the upgrading of facilities,” he said in a statement in Kuching.

He said yesterday’s visit by the two agencies came as a follow-up to allegations by Wanita Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president Voon Shiak Ni of air and water pollution discharge at the plant.

“We operate all of our businesses at the highest level possible and allegations such as this diminish the efforts of all our employees to protect the environment,” said Curtis, adding that the plant’s drainage system only processed rain water.

The water used for cooling the plant’s equipment were circulated, handled and processed by a closed circuit piping system, he said.

He said this particular plant not only complied to DOE levels but produced less than half the level of emission that the DOE targets.
