People living in low lying areas in four states - namely Sabah, Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang - have been urged to be alert and be prepared to evacuate since the monsoon season which started in October is expected to continue until March.

According to a statement from the Meteorological Department of Malaysia, warning of heavy rain (yellow) had been issued on Wednesday since it can cause floods in the affected states.

Among areas placed on alert are Kudat, Sandakan, Beluran, Kinabatangan, Tawau, Lahad  Datu, Kunak, Semporna in Sabah; Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Bachok, Pasir Putih, Machang in Kelantan; Besut, Setiu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun, Kemaman in Terengganu and Kuantan, Pekan, Rompin in Pahang.
