Floods hit Kelantan and Pahang today after the heavy monsoon rains lashed the east coast of peninsular Malaysia, beginning with Terengganu yesterday.

Johor has also been hit by floods, resulting in the number of evacuees in the four states to rise to 997 this evening, up from 430 in the morning.

NONE Heavy rain early today brought flash floods to Kuantan , the capital of Pahang, with some areas submerged under 1.5 metres of floodwaters.

Some of the flooded roads were Jalan Tun Ismail Satu, Jalan Beserah, Jalan Wong Ah Jang, Jalan Lim Hoe Lek, Jalan Abd Aziz, Jalan Mahkota, Jalan Bukit Ubi, Jalan Air Putih, Jalan Pasar and Terminal Makmur.

The flood portal of the Terengganu National Security Council (NSC) reported that Terengganu had the highest number of evacuees at 707.

Pahang had 440 evacuees, Kelantan (199) and Johor (16).

In Terengganu, six of the seven districts in the state have been affected by the floods.

Eighteen flood relief centres have been opened, in Dungun (seven), Setiu (four), Besut (two), Hulu Terengganu (two), Marang (two) and Kuala Terengganu (one). Only Kemaman has been spared so far.

In Pahang, eight relief centres have been opened, six in the Kuantan district and one each in Pekan and Rompin.

In Kelantan, 10 relief centres have been opened, with three of them in Kota Bharu, two each in Pasir Mas, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai and one in Machang.

One relief centre has been opened in Johor, in Batu Pahat.
