The prime minister’s wife, Rosmah Mansor today brought cheer to residents with her visit to two housing areas, Taman Desa Tanjung Damai and Taman Desa Darul Iman in Gong Badak in Kuala Terengganu which experienced floods recently.

Rosmah, who is also the Girl Guides Association of Malaysia (GGAM) president, also handed out cash aid of RM500 each from the National Security Council (MKN) to 77 affected families.

One of the residents, Noraini Ismail, 37 said Rosmah’s presence was a pleasant surprise and showed that the prime minister's wife cared for their plight as she also joined the other volunteers in cleaning up a flood victim’s house.

“I am also thankful to the government for the aid as it can help lessen our financial burden, especially in providing for our children’s schooling needs as the new school session has just started,” she said when met by Bernama after the gotong-royong to clean up the homes of the flood victims.

Noraini’s family was among the 77 who were evacuated and accommodated at SK Kompleks Gong Badak for four days after their housing areas were flooded.

“My house was inundated up to 0.5 metre but my losses are small compared to what the other flood victims have incurred,” she said.

Earlier, Rosmah was received on arrival by Menteri Besar Ahmad Said and his wife Norliza Mahmud, Terengganu MKN principal assistant secretary Mohd Sarif Hasan, state Social Welfare Department director Zuhami Omar and Kuala Terengganu district officer Wan Nawawi Wan Ismail.

Also present were Terengganu GGAM chief Tengku Ramlah Azizah Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, Perak GGAM deputy chief Raja Nor Mahani Raja Shahar Shah, Pahang GGAM deputy chief Tunku Soraya Sultan Ahmad Shah and the wives of state executive councillors.

About 500 people including from the Wanita Umno Sayang Squad, GGAM, Fire and Rescue Department and Umno Youth, as well as local youths took part in the cleaning-up operation.
