The DAP won't hold a re-election to verify its recent internal polls results as the corrected version has been audited and verified by an independent chartered accountant, said secretary-general Lim Guan Eng at a press conference today.

"However, if there are a substantial number of requests from branches or state leaders, we will consider it - we are a democratic party," said Lim, who is also the Penang chief minister.

"They must do it in writing and we will handle the matter internally. They should not do it by going to the BN media and repeating BN's stand on the matter.

"Up to now, we have not received anything in writing. What we have are just news reports in BN controlled newspapers," he stressed.

Recount demanded

Lim was responding to questions regarding ten grassroot members - led by K Yogasigamany from Taman Chi Liung Indah - who demanded a re-election to restore ‘integrity and public confidence' in the party yesterday.

 Yogasigamy said if DAP failed to do a recount, public perception of "fraud and manipulation" in the DAP polls to install a Malay leader will continue to linger and affect the party's reputation.

He echoed calls by BN leaders who had been crying foul of the polls results, demanding the Registrar of Society to insist that DAP conduct a re-election.

Zairil Khir Johari (2) He was referring to Lim's political secretary Zairil Khir Johari ( right ) being propelled into the top 20 central executive committee (CEC) posts despite failing to make it initially when the results were announced during the party's national congress on Dec 15.

All eight Malay candidates vying for the CEC posts had then failed to make the mark but the party later appointed Zairil and academician Ariffin Omar to the CEC.

Lim said the DAP had revealed the corrected results after discovering a computer glitch, and had accepted the resignation of the returning officer responsible for the elections, which was conducted in Penang last month.

"We revealed the corrected results without being asked. If we didn't do it, no one would know, but we wanted to speak the truth because that has been the party's principle all this while," he said.

"The CEC has decided that this are the true and corrected results. But if there are any questions, let's handle them internally."
