Roughly 30 people protested in front of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah mosque in Shah Alam today to hand a memorandum to the Selangor sultan requesting intervention in the ongoing water issue.

Selangor PKR Youth organised the protest to appeal to the monarch to intervene and use the power vested in him to help the state in its efforts to take over water concessionaire Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas).

NONE Attending the protest that began at 2.30pm was Sri Muda assemblyperson Suhaimi Shafiei and Selangor PKR Youth chief Azmizam Zamanhuri.

Among the banners brought to the protest were those that read " Kelana Jaya PKR Youth supports the Selangor government's takeover of Syabas " and " Why trade water for votes? "

After protesting for about fifteen minutes the group proceeded in their respective vehicles to the Istana Kayangan to hand their memorandum to the sultan.

They arrived at the palace gates with Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad at about 3.20pm to hand over the memorandum, which was received by the sultan's representative, Rohisham Ahmad.

Among the contents of the memorandum is a call for the state government to take over Syabas and restructure the water industry.

"The holistic model proposed here is a proven and comprehensive alternative solution to all the water management problems.

"It guarantees a water management that prioritises on efficiency and effectiveness of its services without burdening the people, as what has been achieved in Malacca, Johor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan," the memorandum wrote.

Since December, certain parts of the state has been facing water shortage, said to be due to the failure of pump houses in Wangsa Maju and Pudu Hulu.

However leaders of the ruling party have been quick to blame the problem on Selangor’s refusal to approve the Langat 2 water treatment plant, targeted for 2015.

The government has also frustrated the Pakatan-led state administration’s bid to take over Syabas’ operations.
