The remains of six-year-old William Yau Zhen Zhong, whose decomposed body was found near a jetty in Port Klang on Jan 24, were cremated at the Malacca Memorial Park today.

His body arrived at 12.55pm, accompanied by parents Yau Kok Kang, 38, and Goh Ying Ying, 26.

Following the cremation at about 2pm, the urn containing the ashes were sent to Tokong Batu Berendam for a prayer ceremony before it is placed at the memorial park tomorrow at 9am.

Also present were Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam and Paya Rumput state assemblyperson Tahir Hassan.

Mohd Ali handed over a state government contribution of RM5,000 to the family for the funeral.

Meanwhile, Zhen Zhong’s grandmother, Chee Chou Moi, 68, who also attended the cremation, was a picture of sorrow. Unable to contain her emotion, she was seen continuously comforted by another son, Yau Lun Gang.

Met by reporters, Chee said she was in the dark over the event as she was not initially informed of the events leading to the cremation.

“I cannot sleep, my heart is not calm after news of my grandson’s disappearance broke out... it is as if they (Zhen Zhong’s parents) do not want me to see my grandson for the last time,” said Chee, who claimed she only found out about the cremation from the media.

Zhen Zhong was reported missing on Jan 16, at Jalan Putra Mahkota, Putra Heights, Subang Jaya after he was believed to have exited the family car to look for his parents who had gone to an electrical outlet.

On Jan 24, the body of a boy was found at the Kampung Sungai Sireh jetty before police confirmed it as the victim’s, based on a preliminary report of the DNA test conducted by the Chemistry Department.
