A Himpunan Hijau committee member today distanced the environmental action coalition from the fiery remarks of chairperson Wong Tack, who on Monday had threatened to burn down the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp) in Kuantan.

NONE “That is his personal view,” said Lee Chin Chen ( right ) when contacted by Malaysiakini today.

“We in the DAP do not agree with such ways. We believe that any issues should be resolved peacefully. Not like that,” added Lee who is a member of the socialist party, but sits on the NGO’s committee on his personal capacity.

Lee, however, believes that Wong Tack’s statement will not affect Himpunan Hijau as a whole as it has communicated with its member organisations on the issue.

Wong Tack, he said, will clear the air over his remarks soon.

“He will explain his meaning in a statement in the next few days.”

Wong Tack had reportedly threatened to burn down the plant if it continues to operate 30 days after the 13th general election.

The latter’s remarks caused a furore as many who supported the environmentalist’s cause were uncomfortable with his combative stance.

Police yesterday said that they will probe the matter under criminal intimidation.
