Independent Australian Senator Nick Xenophon is a man who is biased, unprofessional and therefore not eligible to be an election observer, Election Commission (EC) chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said today.

He said the EC had held discussions with Xenophonon on an invitation by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, but the matters that were raised were similar to issues raised by the opposition parties.

“An observer got to be independent, not biased, to correct what is not right, no matter who did the wrong.

“This man (Xenophon) is biased and so he cannot be a fair and just observer. He represents a certain political party... an observer cannot be like that,” he added.

He said as a sovereign country, Malaysia should not be dictated to by other countries.

Abdul Aziz said EC deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar had met Xenophon for a discussion.

“Questions and doubts raised by him were no different from those often raised by an opposition party,” he added.

He said among the issues raised were on the redelineation of the electoral boundaries and the electoral roll.

“I, too, have explained the issue to the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, where it is done according to the Malaysian constitution.

“Malaysia cannot be equalised with the United States of America, Australia or the United Kingdom because our election system is different.

“The ambassador understands and says he does not want to interfere in our system,” he added.
