Sentamil, the latest Tamil newspaper launched today, will compete with other Tamil newspapers in publishing news that can help the Indian community progress.

Deputy Minister of Information Communications and Culture Maglin Dennis D'Cruz is confident the daily newspaper will give comprehensive coverage on government policies to improve the living standard of the Indians.

"Tamil newspapers play an important role in building the community's thinking by publishing correct news and information. Sentamil will inform Indians to apply for loans, scholarships or aid," he told reporters after launching the newspaper with People's Progressive Party ( PPP) president M Kayveas.

Sentamil which means 'Real Tamil' began circulation in peninsular from March 1 at RM1 per copy is the sixth Tamil newspaper in Malaysia.

Five other Tamil daily newspapers in the market are Tamil Nesan, MalaysiaNanban, Makkal Osai, Thinakural and NamNaadu.

D'Cruz who is also PPP senior vice-president said 'Sentamil' is owned by a PPP supporter with media background.

Meanwhile, Kayveas said the newspaper which has an average circulation of 25,000 daily hopes to increase it to 70,000.

Another Tamil newspaper, 'Thai Mozhi' (Mother Tongue) will be launched in April. The free newspaper will carry news on efforts by Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders in helping the Indian community.

The two newspapers would give opportunity to the Indian community to advertise their business for free.
