The Kajang local council (MPKj) has made significant progress in combating illegal dumpers by raising rewards for information leading their identification, resulting in action against them.

The incentive programme was started in 2010.

Initially only RM200 was offered as reward and only two tip-offs were received till early last year.

NONE "Last year, the reward was increased to RM500. Since October last year to January this year 20 tip-offs have been made with 13 individuals rewarded," said councillor Eddy Eng ( right ) at a press conference in Balakong today.

He said that the surge in tip-offs led to 212 compounds issued, 123 of which were settled by the offenders, with 89 were unpaid.

Out of those who refused to pay the compounds, five were taken to court, with four ordered to pay RM2000 each while another settled out of court.

MPKJ has also seizing vehicles found to be dumping trash illegally. Action was taken against 59 vehicles resulting in over RM22,000 in further compounds.

Eng said that citizens have responded well to their increased incentive, forming groups that help to monitor and identify garbage dumpers in their neighborhoods.
