Maimun Jusuh, 94, is offering herself as an electoral candidate again.

Tok Mon, as she is better known, collected a nomination form from the Terengganu office of the Election Commission (EC) today.

She contested the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat in the last general election, in 2008, and garnered just 685 votes. She lost her deposit as well.

“I contest on the trust of the elders. I am afraid of what may happen in the hereafter (if I don’t contest). Win or lose, Tok will just contest to uphold the people’s trust.

“Tok had wanted to contest many times, but the ‘dacing’ (balance scale of the Barisan Nasional) is always strong. To find a proposer and a supporter, just two people, is difficult,” she said when approached by reporters as she was leaving the EC office.

Earlier, she had taken a taxi to the office alone to get the form.

She said she contested because she felt responsible for the lot of the poor and elderly people like herself.

However, she had no intention of joining any party if she won in the general election.

“Tok will ask people. For the campaign, I will manage somehow. My children know I am contesting but they don't like me spending money. I don’t listen to them because I am upholding the people’s trust,” she said.

On the logo she would be using, Tok Mon said she would think of one after her application to use the Terengganu state government logo was rejected by the EC.

“Tok wanted the symbol of the palace (state government logo), but the EC said I cannot use it. We will wait for the decision of EC. I already have a certificate entrusting me to use the logo,” she said, producing a certificate for a civics course dated 1954 from a blue canvas bag.

Tok Mon used the keys logo to contest in 2008.

In that general election, she was involved in a three-corner fight among former deputy education minister, the late Razali Ismail of BN, and PAS deputy president Mohammad Sabu.
