The People’s Progressive Party (PPP), a Barisan Nasional (BN) component party, today confirmed that it will contest one parliamentary and four state seats in the 13th general election, polling for which is on May 5.     

Its president, M Kayveas, said the party had been allocated the Kepong parliamentary seat in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and four state seats, namely Kota Laksamana (Malacca), Kota Alam Shah (Selangor), Pasir Bedamar (Perak) and Manik Urai (Kelantan).

“All five seats for the PPP are seats lost (by Barisan Nasional) in the last (2008) general election. Tough, but someone has to take these seats. Getting a total five seats for PPP is an achievement,” he said in a Twitter message today.

Kayveas disclosed to reporters the names of the candidates proposed by the PPP, after the presentation of the BN instruments of candidacy and candidates’ pledge to the state BN chairpersons by caretaker Prime Minister and BN chairperson Najib Abdul Razak in Kuala Lumpur.

He said the PPP had proposed Federal Territory PPP chairperson A Chandrakumanan for Kepong; Senator Chiw Tiang Chai for Kota Laksamana; PPP vice-president Maglin Dennis D'Cruz and a journalist for Kota Alam Shah; Perak PPP treasurer Kerk Guan Chuan for Pasir Bedamar and PPP vice-president Nik Sapeia Nik Yusoff for Manik Urai.

“We know that Kota Laksamana is a DAP traditional seat, never won by the BN. However, we will try our best and see the people’s acceptance there,” he said.

Kayveas said it would be known tomorrow whether Maglin (deputy information, communications and culture minister) or the journalist would be PPP’s candidate for the Kota Alam Shah seat after the Selangor BN liaison chairperson names the BN candidates for the state.

In the 12th general election, in 2008, the PPP contested the Taiping parliamentary and Pasir Bedamar state seats, and lost both.  

Kayveas, who contested in Taiping, lost to DAP’s Nga Kor Ming by 11,298 votes.

In Pasir Bedamar, PPP’s Lee Heng was defeated by DAP’s Seah Leong Peng by a 7,914-vote majority.   

In 2008, DAP’s Dr Tan Seng Giaw beat BN-Gerakan’s Lau Hoi Keong to win the Kepong seat with a 23,848-vote majority.
