The incumbent for the Malim Nawar state seat, Keshvinder Singh, today denied that he would contest as an independent in the general election on May 5 because he still supports the Barisan Nasional (BN) and wants the BN to win.

NONE Keshvinder Singh ( right ) said that if he were to contest in the 13th general election (GE13) as an independent, it would mean that he was betraying the BN which had helped him considerably in developing the area.

“Although I was not selected to contest (as a BN friendly candidate), it is not a factor for me not to support the BN, in fact, I will continue to be loyal to the party even if I remain as an Independent.

“I don’t want to contest because I want the BN to win and I also plan to go around the state to assist in the BN campaign,” he told reporters at his home in Kampar today.

He said the BN candidate from MCA, Chang Gwo Chyang, had a good chance of winning because he was well known and a local compared to the DAP candidate, Leong Cheok Keng, from Ipoh.

In the 2008 general election, Keshvinder Singh who contested on a DAP ticket, beat the BN candidate, Dr Chai Song Poh, with a majority of 1,362 votes before leaving the DAP to become an Independent assemblyperson in 2010.
