The Election Commission (EC) says it knows how to differentiate among voters who have the same name: it goes by their identity card numbers.

Berita Harian today quotes EC secretary Kamaruddin Mohamad Baria as denying allegations made in the social media that there are three identity cards in the name of Ab Rapar Awang.

NONE Kamaruddin ( left ) said checks by the EC showed three people with the name Ab Rapar Awang, with different fingerprints and different pictures.

"EC recognises that names used to identify voters in the electoral roll will cause confusion, as there are people who have the same name and spelling, but have different identity cards."

For example, Kamaruddin said, there were 1,597 people with the name Ismail Ibrahim, 1,401 Fatimah Abdullah, 1,377 Fatimah Ismail, 1,377 Fatimah Ahmad, 1,368 Ismail Ahmad and 1,039 Azizah Ahmad.

"Checks by the EC revealed all of them possess different identity cards. They are not the same individuals and only the spelling of their names is the same," the Malay daily quotes him as saying.

Election watchdog Malaysian Electoral Roll Analysis Project (Merap) research assistant Lee Wee Tak said on April 19 that he found at least 900 people with the name 'Fatimah Ismail' registered as voters Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Pahang.

Merap also reported three 'Ab Rapar Awang' were found in the Indera Mahkota parliamentary constituency.
