Two men aged 33 and 28 were arrested at a hotel in Jalan Raja Laut in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday for allegedly hacking two government department websites, namely the National Registration Department (NRD) and the Information Department.

The police seized four laptops, three mobile phones, external hard disks and external drives from the duo, a 33-year-old entrepreneur and a computer expert, who are remanded until tomorrow to facilitate investigations, said Bukit Aman Commercial CID director Syed Ismail Syed Azizan.

He said the police received reports about the hacking from the NRD on Dec 12 last year and the Information Department on Feb 18.

Several NRD branches throughout the country allegedly received an email instructing them to dispatch MyKad and MyKid, which remained uncollected for 18 months to a person in Keningau, Sabah, Syed Ismail told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.

Syed Ismail said the suspects, who were also believed to have hacked the Information Department’s e-Akhbar and e-Press, were being investigated under Section 5 (1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997.
