Limited future for Najib after worst electoral showing

your say Swipenter: After winning GE13, Premier Najib Abdul Razak now has a bigger battle on his hands; the fight to retain his president's post in Umno. If I were Najib, I would neutralise all his enemies within his party by whatever means.

The first two to be neutralised should be former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad and DPM Muhyiddin Yassin. If he accomplishes this, then the other troublemakers would be as meek as mice, and become his yes-men.

Najib may have won the battle but he could lose the war. He must learn from how former PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was removed from Umno. He should know best since he was the person replacing Abdullah.

Paul Warren: I beg to differ in this analysis of what would become of Najib. I would think that within Umno he would become even stronger, brushing aside Mahathir and his henchmen, including Muhyiddin.

After all, hadn't these leaders and thinkers abandoned ‘Brand Barisan Nasional'? Therefore, shouldn't Najib feel that he, more than anyone else, saved Umno from the rule of a Pakatan Rakyat government?

Who are they to give Najib a target to achieve when on their own and under their own brand, they would have not had got a hearing, let alone a convincing victory?

Did he not then save them from drowning? Did he not allegedly sanction the planned transportation of 40,000 to 60,000 foreigners to vote for them? Should they not be thankful to him? The rest of Umno should better shut up.

Fair and Open: During Najib's speech on election night, if one had been observant, one would have seen Muhyiddin eyeing Najib sternly, as if he will be in the premier's place soon. Umno will have plenty of infighting now.

Anyway, it is definitely racist for a PM to address his countrymen as Chinese instead of Malaysians.

At the least, a statesman should say ‘Chinese Malaysians'. But Najib is implying that the Chinese Malaysians are ‘pendatang' (immigrants) since ‘Chinese' refers the people of China.

Doc: It looks like Najib is certain to be another high profile casualty in GE13. His Umno enemies are sharpening their swords at this moment and will attack him soon.

We will just have to wait and see how history repeats itself as another prime minister is taken down by his own party.

In addition, the PM says he is working towards eradicating corruption and yet he does not investigate the ill-gotten wealth of Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud.

The moment your actions are in sync with your words, then perhaps you may have Chinese support, but until then, don't even dream of it.

FellowMalaysian: After dishing out handouts totaling a massive RM11 billion (according to academic Bridget Welsh), this is a disastrous outing for Najib.

Before election day, he said he would be surprised if BN was not returned with a two-thirds majority. Indeed the BN machinery spent a year trying to win Selangor.

His effort to win over the voters failed miserably and the Umno seniors will not be happy with his lackadaisical performance. This does not auger well for him if he wishes to remain as the premier.

Lionking: Everyone is blaming the Chinese tsunami. This is not be entirely true and the sooner the incompetent BN realises this, the better.

The rakyat has rejected BN because of corruption, high level of crime, a useless education system, low salaries, racism, and problems with the economy. These are reasons why BN cannot be the party to lead us into the future.

The rakyat are not stupid and things have changed but not BN. The ministers do not inspire confidence. So what is their plan to handle the above shortcomings?

Create special courts to try corruption cases? You can have many courts but if there is no will, nothing will move.

Jesse: Unless Umno tackles corruption issues and race-based politics, its support among urban voters, regardless of race, will continue to slide.

If it misreads what voters are saying, and continue with its merry and corrupt ways, then it does so at its own peril.

Citizens are sick and tired of its mindless handouts, discriminatory policies and cronies sucking the nation's coffers empty.

Caripasal: Muhyiddin will take over in the coming Umno election, paving the way for Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir the next term.

Ano1nymous: Malaysians must now support Najib and save him for the alternative is more frightening. If the Umno warlords overthrow Najib like they did Abdullah, it would mean that Muhyiddin ascends and next in line would be Mukhriz and it will be Mahathirism all over again.

As MB in Kedah, it means that Mukhriz will be able to secure the support of all delegates in the Kedah division when he fights for the top post.

ONG: Depending on how one looks at the results, Najib did not necessarily do worse than Abdullah in 2008. He may have lost seven more parliamentary seats compared with the 2008 results but this loss makes little or no difference to BN's hold on power at federal level.

On the other hand, he won back two states, Kedah and Perak, the former quite comfortably.

Abdullah lost five states in 2008. Najib lost only three in 2013. Using this logic, he can tell Mahathir and Muhyiddin to get lost.

Louis: The last time Pak Lah lost badly, he stepped down. Now, Najib has done even worse. He lost an extra seven seats and on top of that BN could garner less than 50 percent of the popular vote, much less than the passing mark.

As such, Najib should leave on his own volition before being unceremoniously shown the door.

I agree that Najib managed to wrest back Kedah and Perak. This was achieved after handing out a massive amount of cash and goodies. But winning those two states does not measure up to the value of the handouts.

In football terms, Umno want to win the prized trophies of Penang and Selangor. This is the equivalent of winning the Champions' League.

After spending heavily on players, most club managers would be sacked for failing to get that trophy despite winning minor trophies like FA Cup.

Any manager worth his salt would voluntarily hand in his resignation for failing to get the ultimate trophy. Najib should do likewise.
