Police are looking for several men for allegedly harassing and preventing seven Indian voters from Kedah from casting their ballot after alleging them of being phantom voters on Sunday.

The harassment emanated after three of the voters could not find their names on the electoral roll at the polling station at Sekolah Kebangsaan Ladang in Kuala Terenganu at about 2pm, said Terengganu police chief Jamshah Mustapa.

He said the voters aged between 24 and 27 were shoved at and one of them had a machete placed on his neck by one of the men who alleged them of being phantom voters from Bangladesh.

"The voters were Universiti Malaysia Terengganu ex-students who registered as voters while they were studying there and came to Terengganu to vote.

"With the police intervention, four of them eventually voted at Sekolah Kebangsaan Ladang after their names were found on the list while the other three voted at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sultan Sulaiman 2 after their names were found there," he added.

Jamshah said the police knew the identities of the suspects and urged them to surrender for investigations under Section 3 (1) (n) of the Election Offences Act 1954 for obstructing voters and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

He said the police had also arrested a 30-year-old man who allegedly beat up a 26-year-old voter together with several others after alleging him to be a phantom voter in Kampung Teluk Pasu, Manir at 12.15pm on Sunday.

The suspect, who is from Kampung Tanjung Bunut Manir, was produced in court today, and the police are looking for the other suspects, he added.
