Some 300 people were made homeless in a fire which completely destroyed a 30-door longhouse, Rh Agan in Bukit Goram, about three kilometres from Kapit, early this morning.

According to an officer of the Fire and Rescue Department Jackson Anyie, his department received a call about the fire at about 8.10am.

He said he immediately rushed to the scene with 18 firefighters and six volunteer firefighters in two teams.

“We managed to bring it under control within one hour but the wooden longhouse was completely destroyed.

“We are still trying to determine the cause and the estimated losses,” he said.

Meanwhile, two persons sustained slight injuries when trying to save their property.

They included a grandmother who was sent to the hospital by the firefighters and a 30-year old man who was sent there by his relatives.     

Most of the adults were away in town during the fire, which also destroyed cars and motorcycles parked in the compound.
