The big question of new registration for Kuala Lumpur vehicles once the WYY series ends has been answered.

The new series will start with W followed by numbers from 1 to 9999 and ending with A.

Disclosing this in Putrajaya today, Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said vehicle registration in the city was currently running at WYK 6xxx and that the WYY series (ending at WYY9999) was expected to run out in July.

“In connection with this, it has been decided that new registration of vehicles for the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur after the WYY series will begin with W1A and end at W9999A. The next in the series will be from W1B till W9999B, followed by W1C and so on,” he told a press conference after attending a briefing on the Transport Ministry in Putrajaya today.

After the series ends at W9999Y, it will continue with WA1-9999A , then WY1-9999Y, followed by WAA1-9999A till WAY1-9999Y.

The new series will end at WYY1-9999Y.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin, who is also Defence Minister,  pledged to improve urban public transportation as outlined under the National Key Result Areas (NKRAs).

“With cooperation from the relevant ministries, I am confident a transformation can be brought about to meet the people’s needs on urban transportation,” he said.

He added that the Transport Ministry and all agencies under it would put the people first by striving to attain the right balance on all transportation related matters, be the mode be land, air or sea.

He also said due attention would be given to the Automated Enforcement System (AES).

“There are issues that require immediate focus, there are some which require a cabinet decision while there are some that need a third party decision. The issues are numerous; it is not just about the AES. I am looking at all the issues. 

“Give me a bit of time because this is my first day here (Transport Ministry). We will decide when we are comfortable.

“Issues like the AES cannot be decided overnight... I am the transport minister for the country and not just for the AES alone,” he said.

He said this when asked to comment on the status of the implementation of the AES following the Attorney-General’s Chambers last December calling for a halt on court cases on summonses issued under the system pending review of some technicalities.
