The Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) has confirmed that the Sungai Lembing Tunnel is safe for visitors.

MPK committee member Suhaimi Sulong said, however, the council was still investigating an incident involving the replica of a statue which fell and hurt a visitor to the tunnel on Saturday.

Suhaimi, who chaired a full MPK meeting on behalf of council president Zulkifli Yaacob, said all reports of detailed investigations on the case were being scrutinised by officers and engineers of MPK.

“MPK has also taken a report from the police on the incident. Nonetheless, MPK confirms that the structure of the tunnel is safe and the problem only involves the statue in question,” he said.  

He said the public and visitors should not worry about the situation as the victim was only slightly hurt and was allowed to leave the hospital the next day.    

On Saturday, Chai Coon Chok, 52, was fortunate the 30kg replica did not fall on his head as it could have resulted in serious injury.

In the incident at 3pm, he was only hurt on the waist and leg.

Chai, from Kulai, Johor Baru, came with 22 members of a tour group from Singapore to visit the tunnel.
