Klias state assemblyperson Lajim Ukin has been named the opposition leader in the Sabah state assembly.

Sabah state assembly speaker Salleh Said said he had received a letter on June 11, to inform that Lajim had been proposed as the opposition leader in the state assembly of Sabah and that he had no objection.

“It is up to the opposition to decide and appoint their representative because the state assembly has no jurisdiction to appoint one. We do not decide who is the opposition leader,” he said after meeting the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) chief Mohammad Mentek at his office in Kota Kinabalu today.

Salleh said a letter signed by five state assemblypersons, including Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Parti Reformasi Sabah (Star) Sabah president Dr Jeffrey Kitingan was received together with a letter from the PKR headquarters and signed by PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution.

He added that a special place would be allocated for the opposition leader with the necessary facilities.

In the 13th general election held on May 5, Barisan Nasional (BN) Sabah captured 48 of the 60 state assembly seats while the opposition comprising DAP, PKR and Star managed to win 12 seats.
