The High Court in Kuala Lumpur today increased the fine imposed on the private college student who participated in the anti-National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) rally last April to RM3,000.

Previously, Umar Mohamad Azmi, 24, was convicted and ordered by the magistrate’s court to pay a fine of RM1,000 and to serve one month’s jail.

Judge Kamardin Hashim, after hearing the appeal against the conviction and the sentence on Umar today, however, set aside the jail sentence.

Umar was charged with obstructing the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement officer, Mohd Masran Mamat, 34, from discharging his duties to arrest a man at Dataran Merdeka, Jalan Raja in Kuala Lumpur.

The offence was committed at 8.05am on April 23 this year.

The charge under Section 186 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of two years or fine not exceeding RM10,000, or both, if convicted.

Umar was represented by lawyer Syahredzan Johan, while deputy public prosecutor Jean Sharmila prosecuted.
