It was my second assignment as a journalist. I had been asked to cover the Subang Jaya Municipal Council full-board meeting. I browsed through my wardrobe and selected the two most appropriate outfits and laid them on my bed.

The first one was a tank top accompanied by a three-quarter sleeved knitted cardigan and dark brown slacks. The other option was a fully covered black kneelength dress paired with a blazer.

After much thought, I went for the second option — an outfit that covered my arms, chest and a decent amount of my legs. The theme of the day was conservative and appropriate.

Amanda

Upon my arrival at the Subang Jaya Municipal Council, I was warmly received by the staff. However, it was shortlived after one of the council's public relations officer approached me and said: "Sorry, Miss Amanda but you can't enter wearing that."

"Huh, seriously?" was my immediate response. I was in disbelief and deeply embarrassed. The officer revealed that my skirt was one inch above my knees and deemed "not appropriate". Apparently, the guidelines require skirts to be below knee-length.

I was politely told to leave together with another journalist who was in a red dress and covered her top with a shawl.

I left feeling puzzled. I told my colleagues of my experience when I got back to office but was told it was a norm as they faced similar situations in the past, too.

Perhaps I should take a colleague's advice to keep a spare long-sleeved collared shirt and a pair of slacks with me at all times to avoid any disappointment.
