The Perlis fatwa committee has banned the smoking and sale of shisha (flavoured tobacco used in the smoking process using a hookah) as smoking the shisha is more harmful than smoking

cigarettes.

The mufti of Perlis, Dr Juanda Jaya, said the meeting of the state fatwa committee on June 24 had decided on the ban and a letter would be sent to the state government and Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) on the matter.

Speaking to reporters in Kangar today, he hoped the MPK could stop the sale of shisha for the benefit of the people.

Dr Juanda said the practice of smoking the shisha was not only a waste of time for the youths but also hazardous to health.

He said the ban had been implemented by the Malacca state government since 2009 and Perlis was following in Malacca’s footsteps as the habit was detrimental to health.
