Palanivel moots that schools close when API touches 200
Natural Resources and Environment Minister G Palanivel has suggested to the cabinet yesterday to order for schools to be closed when the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading touches 200, instead of 300 now.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister G Palanivel has suggested to the cabinet yesterday to order for schools to be closed when the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading touches 200, instead of 300 now.
This was to avoid threatening the health of students and teachers as an API of 200 indicated that the air level was already unhealthy, he added.
He told this to reporters after visiting the fire prevention and peat soil management project at Kampung Pulau Kempas, Mukim Tanjung 12 in Kuala Langat today.
On the visit, Palanivel said the project was part of efforts to enhance the water absorption capability of peat soil.
He said the project, which started in 2009 in Selangor, Johor and Pahang, had been expanded to Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak.
The government, he said, had spent almost RM11.8 million for the project since 2009.
