PAS are tentatively set to announce its candidate for the Kuala Besut by-election on Tuesday, the day where BN is also scheduled to do so.

azlan PAS by-election director Satiful Bahri Mamat said the announcement will likely be made by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang on Tuesday night, but stressed that the plan is subject to possible change.

"We should be able to resolve the candidacy issue soon," he told Sinar Harian yesterday.

Wan Azhar Wan Ahmad, the Besut PAS division chief, is widely tipped to be fielded for the by-election.

Meanwhile, deputy BN chief Muhyiddin Yassin is scheduled to announce BN's candidate on Tuesday. Muhyiddin was previously named as BN's election director for this contest.

The Kuala Besut by-election was called following the death of incumbent Dr A Rahman Mokhtar on June 26, paving the way for Malaysia's first by-election since the 13th general election just two months ago.

BN currently has a simple majority control of the state legislative assembly with 17 seats while Pakatan Rakyat has 15.

The Election Commission fixed polling for July 24, while nomination day falls on July 12.
