Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has no objections to DAP's plans to compel its party members on the state cabinet to publicly declare their assets.

"We will will not stop any individual who wants to publicly declare their assets before and after assuming the position, even though it may not be suitable for implementation," Khalid said in a press statement today.

He was responding to DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng's criticsm of the Selangor decision not to compel its state cabinet members to publicly declare their assets.

Instead, information about their assets must be declared to the state government for future reference. Khalid said that this was necessary for security reasons.

Describing the move as a "partial declaration", Lim ordered all DAP state cabinet members to make their assets publicly known.

'Thanks for the concern'

Khalid today said that he was appreciative of DAP's concerns, but maintained that there is a need to ensure that such information would not be abused.

"The Selangor policy is clear. Exco members must publicly declare transactions involving all assets obtained after taking up the position and the information will be updated periodically if there are any new sales and purchase of properties.

"This is to ensure that no exco member abuse their powers and cause a conflict of interest in any transaction," he said.

Khalid said that his administration is committed towards transparency and responsibility and thus would not compromise with any individual who abused their powers for personal interest.
