Sabah police commissioner Hamza Taib today verified that based on investigations, the letter alleging a second wave of intrusion by the southern Philippines militant group had been found to be a hoax.

He said the police did not take the spread of such rumours lightly and had taken steps to tighten security, including mobilising 100 strike force personnel who could spring into action anytime.

"Please don't spread such rumours to scare the public," he said after visiting the Sandakan police headquarters.

However, he urged the public and community leaders to remain alert and inform security forces about any suspicious activity which could threaten national security.

The July 3 letter - signed by a 'Militant Commando' on behalf of the Sulu sultanate and the family of Kiram - was sent to the Tambunan district officer, police officer and community, warning them of an imminent attack in August as revenge for the bloodshed in Kampung Tanduo, Lahad Datu, in March.

He advised Sabahans to remain calm, to stop speculating and to instead cooperate with the security forces to prevent such incidents.
