Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamarudin has been ordered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court to pay RM300,000 to senior lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.

Shafee's lawyer S Ravindran said the matter came before senior assistant registrar Farah Hana Hashim this morning.

NONE Farah Hana, in assessing damages, said Raja Petra (left) had failed to show remorse as he had not tendered an apology for posting the three articles on his website between Aug 6 and 11, 2008.

She said the gravity and seriousness of the libel had injured Shafee's reputation and good standing as a lawyer.

"There was no evidence to show such was the conduct of the plaintiff (Shafee)," said Farah Hana, adding that no evidence had been presented in court to show that Shafee had provoked Raja Petra, thereby resulting in the articles.

Apart from the damages awarded, she also ordered five percent interest to be paid from the time the judgment had been entered last year.

On Aug 13, 2008, Shafee obtained an ex-parte injunction from the High Court ordering Raja Petra to take down the three articles, as well as all the comments related to these.

In a statement of defence filed on Nov 25, 2008, Raja Petra denied that the three articles were false, malicious or defamatory.

On Feb 10, 2011, KL High Court judge Justice John Louis O Hara ruled that the articles were defamatory and ordered damages to be assessed.
