Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Shahidan Kassim says there will be no special parliamentary session on serious crime.

"The existing laws are adequate. No need (for the special parliamentary session)," he was quoted in today's Sinar Harian .

He was reportedly responding to the opposition's call for a special parliamentary session before Hari Raya Puasa on August 8. The report did not name who had made the call.

There were several gun crimes that have been highlighted over the past week, including assassination attempts on MyWatch chairperson R Sri Sanjeevan on July 27 and Arab Malaysian Development Bank Hussain Ahmad Najadi on July 29, as well as several robbery cases.

There have been an average of two cases of crimes per week involving gunshots from the assailant, according to the PKR-linked think tank Political Studies for Change (KPRU).
